Architectural Precast Integration Across a Vibrant Urban Greenspace
Located in the heart of Downtown Cary, NC, this large-scale public park expansion transformed several acres into a dynamic destination for residents and visitors alike. As part of Phase Two, Lucas Concrete provided over 538 custom precast elements, totaling nearly 1,890 cubic feet, including curbing, steps, banding, a dog tunnel, and intricately formed benches, each element carefully crafted to integrate seamlessly into the park’s evolving infrastructure and natural surroundings.
The precast scope was extensive and varied, with elements playing a central role in supporting both the functionality and design continuity of the park. Curved benches built into concave retaining walls, ADA-compliant sandblasted stair nosings, and elegant ornamental steps required meticulous coordination and formwork. Precast banding and steps complemented the existing stonework, tying together different material palettes across green spaces, walking trails, play areas, and the café zone.
To achieve aesthetic harmony, all elements were cast using a single custom mix, with subtle tonal variation achieved through in-form curing time adjustments, a unique method that aligned precast color with surrounding natural stone and flatwork. Special attention was given to installation precision, particularly in areas of complex grade transitions, and across elements with non-standard geometries.
This project is a clear example of how architectural precast can elevate public infrastructure. From a custom dog tunnel in the “Barkyard” to sculptural benches outside the park café, every precast component was tailored to enhance the user experience, support long-term durability, and meet the evolving needs of an urban environment visited by more than 750,000 people annually.
